Music for sundown, these traditional Evensong liturgies are settings of little-known, 17th century, metaphysical poetry. Anna Lewton-Brain’s research led to the revelation of music by celebrated, British, 17th century composers, John Jenkins and Thomas Ford. North American premieres, these musical gems speak to the human condition across time: misery, desire and joy!
Internationally-acclaimed tenor Charles Daniels, best known for his interpretations of Baroque vocal music, has made over ninety recordings as a soloist, including works by Handel, Dowland, Monteverdi, and Bach, for leading labels such as Deutsche Grammophon and Hyperion. His global concert presence is marked by regular appearances at the BBC Proms, collaborations with esteemed ensembles and conductors, and performances in landmark works including roles such as the Evangelist in Bach's Passions and the title role in Monteverdi’s "L’Orfeo". Daniels's prolific career has cemented his status as a cornerstone of the early music world, continually enriching the tradition with his innovative interpretations and breathtaking performances.
American tenor Jeffrey Thompson is internationally acclaimed for his inspired interpretations of early music. He garnered First Prize at the Concours International de Chant Baroque de Chimay, Belgium, and was chosen to participate in the first edition of Le Jardin des Voix with Les Arts Florissants. Other career highlights include the roles of Zotico in Cavalli's Eliogabalo, under the direction of René Jacobs; Atys in Les Paladins; Grétry's Le Magnifique and Monsigny’s Le Roi et Le Fermier both recorded for the Naxos label; a recording of the title role in Rameau’s Castor et Pollux in Sydney and performances of the title role in Monteverdi’s Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria in Korea, New York, Luxembourg, Versailles, Palermo and Berlin. Recordings include an album of motets by Sébastien de Brossard, and a solo disc dedicated to Henry Lawes, both with the ensemble La Rêveuse, the Te Deum’s of Charpentier and Lully and English Odes by Purcell and Clarke with Le Poème Harmonique, Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu Nostri with the Ricercar Consort and a solo disc entitled An Englishman’s Ballad with gambist Philippe Pierrot and theorbist Daniel Zapico featuring English ballads and songs by Purcell, Blow and Clarke.
